Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby today announced that David Lloyd is the new title sponsor of the 1872 Cup – the world’s oldest inter-city rugby match.

As a result of the sponsorship, the flagship fixtures in the Scottish professional rugby calendar will now be named the David Lloyd 1872 Cup.

Glasgow Warriors Chief Executive, Ian Riddoch, said: “I’m delighted to welcome David Lloyd as title sponsor of the 1872 Cup.

”David Lloyd has already proven to us that they are a very proactive sponsor and I look forward to working with them in the season ahead.”

Edinburgh Rugby Chief Executive, Nic Cartwright, added: “Everyone is looking forward to the challenge of the David Lloyd 1872 Cup which is now over back-to-back fixtures during the festive period.

“A large number of supporters that attended the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Tests at Murrayfield and in Aberdeen have already exchanged their voucher for a free ticket to the Boxing Day clash when we hope to break the attendance record for a Magners League game this year.”

David Lloyd is Europe’s largest racquets, health and fitness operator with 78 clubs in the UK and a further 10 sites across Europe including clubs in Amsterdam, Brussels, Barcelona and Dublin. David Lloyd has over 20,000 members in its four clubs in the central belt of Scotland.

Marc Crothall, Cluster General Manager of the David Lloyd club’s in Glasgow said, “We are delighted and proud to be sponsoring the 1872 Cup. Many of our clubs have close ties with some of the UK’s leading rugby clubs and top rugby players - past and present. So, it’s a natural fit for us to be sponsoring this world renowned inter-city Cup.

“David Lloyd Leisure’s roots are in tennis but we now offer an unrivalled range of sports and leisure facilities for all tastes and age groups. By supporting this competition, we are keen to highlight our diverse range of offerings and promote the importance of a healthier balanced lifestyle to a wider audience.”

The David Lloyd 1872 Cup is contested by Scotland’s two professional teams, Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby Club, when they meet in the Magners League.

The winner of the David Lloyd 1872 Cup is the team with the highest aggregate points score over the two league meetings.

The first David Lloyd 1872 Cup match of the 2008/09 season will take place at Murrayfield on Friday 26 December (kick-off 7:30pm) with the decider at Firhill on Friday 2 January (kick-off 7:30pm).

Those that attended the Bank of Scotland Corporate Autumn Tests at Murrayfield and in Aberdeen are now able to exchange their voucher for a free ticket to the Boxing Day clash.

Those eligible to take part in the promotion should redeem their free ticket via scottishrugby.org before midnight on Saturday (29 November).
