Andy looks for a positive response

Andy Nicol says the departure of Kiwi Searancke could have a positive effect on the team when Glasgow face Edinburgh in Friday's Pro-Cup at Hughenden.

"History is full of examples of a football team raising their game when the manager leaves and I think the same can happen with us. There was a buzz among the players at training today and the quality of the work was high. If it does happen that way against Edinburgh, it won't be down to anything Richie or I have done."

"It will be achieved by the players. You sense they want to right the wrongs of the season. We have not under-performed. We have lost something from our game and the aim is to get it back this weekend," said the Glasgow captain who plans to retire at the end of the season. Andy went on to reject the suggestion that he may be in the running for a coaching position with Glasgow.

Despite helping to conduct the squad session in the wake of Kiwi Searancke's departure, Andy said: "If I go into coaching I will serve a stint as a club coach before even thinking about moving up."

Andy Nicol is one of a number of injured Glasgow players who will miss Friday's game. He said: "I'm injured at the moment but I fully intend to get some game-time before the end of the season. I'd hate for this to be it." Also sidelined is Tommy Hayes (ankle), Gordon Simpson (shoulder) and Donnie Macfadyen (foot). Richie Dixon will decide today if Jason White can play after the big forward suffered a dead leg in Scotland's win over Italy last Saturday.
