Euan looks ahead

Euan is looking forward to getting back in action
Euan Murray won't be wasting too much time looking back at last weekend's events - he's got far too many things to look forward to and goals to achieve.

Now recovering at home, Euan admitted he has spent some time this week considering his health and the dangers of rugby. "I've been sitting back just thinking of life as a whole," he explained in today's edition of The Scotsman.

"There are more important things than rugby, and one is my health and it is important that I focus on ensuring that is right. There does not seem any long-term concern, so I'm hopeful it's just about taking it easy for a while.

"But I already know that I can't give up playing rugby, providing the check-ups don't show anything new. I just feel that you can't hide yourself away from the world. There are dangers, and we all know that, but there are dangers in a lot of careers - is it realistic to go looking for something that has no dangers at all?"

Euan and the medical staff at Glasgow are confident that, though still struggling with sleeping patterns, he will return to full fitness in a matter of weeks rather than months. How long before he plays again remains a point no-one is willing to push, however.

"I got out of hospital late on Sunday night but I've been back in for check-ups and, on Saturday, I'm going in for cognitive tests which should tell us a bit more about the degree of injury I've suffered," Murray added.

"The tests today [Wednesday] show my memory is improving and I hope to do some light jogging at the weekend but I'll also be at Glasgow's game against Cardiff on Saturday night.

"I feel much better than I did at the weekend. The headaches have gone, although I am still a bit sluggish during the day, but the doctor said I would feel tired.

"He warned me also that it would be like doing lots of things on a computer but forgetting to press 'save' and losing it all, and I know what he means. I still can't remember the incident during the game at all. I recall us scoring the first try and going into a scrum, but the next thing I can remember is going into the ambulance on a stretcher. I'm told it will come back in time.

"I think it was worse for those watching though. I've seen the newspaper pictures and read the reports of me wrestling on the pitch with the doctor and shouting out - all my family and friends have given their accounts as well - but I don't remember any of that.

"I've just been told to rest and have this complete week off. I will see Gerry Haggerty, the club doctor, and see the guys later in the week, and I'll take part in the cognitive tests on Saturday. I have been told that it takes time for players to recover from this sort of thing, but how long is anybody's guess.

"Gerry won't let me return before I am fully ready and I'm happy with that. He's looking out for me and my interests, and I will not risk my health."

Euan claims he'll step up his new piano lessons and is also looking to get his hands dirty again as a vet, having qualified in veterinary science two years ago.

"This might give me a bit of time to get my hand warm again because a rugby player's career is relatively short anyway. This injury has probably just reinforced the fact that I'll not be a rugby player all my life.

"But, hopefully, I've got a few years in rugby left yet, and a few goals to achieve. I was delighted to go on tour with Scotland last summer, but it's been disappointing having injuries since then. This is another setback, but thankfully I seem to have come through it with no real problems so I'm looking forward."

Delighted to see Euan has not lost his sense of humour and is on the road to a full recovery. However the concept of a Vet keeping his hand warm doesn't bear thinking about. Hope he remembers where to put it next time he scrums down!!

Nevermind the cheerleaders, get Euan on for a half-time medley of Broadway hits.
