As well as helping to continue the development of Glasgow Warriors, his time will also be spent engaging with the rugby and business communities and supporting commercial initiatives.
He will be based at BT Murrayfield and Scotstoun Stadium.
Al said: "I'm genuinely excited about the next stage of my career and adding my support to the business side of Scottish Rugby.
"Last week was first week in my new role and it's been great to see things from a different perspective.
"I've worked hard over my playing career to learn and develop my business knowledge, spending time internally with our commercial team as well as getting out to many of our sponsors and partners to gain experience of how their organisations work.
"It's now time to use all the knowledge I've gained over the last 13 years - on and off the pitch – and add to it daily to do the best job I can for the business.
"I'm very passionate about rugby in Glasgow and following the PRO12 success I believe we can build a legacy and continue to promote and develop the game in the West of Scotland and beyond."
Scottish Rugby's Director of Commercial Operations, Communications and Public Affairs, Dominic McKay said: "We're thrilled that Al will continue to be part of our family and has joined our team at BT Murrayfield, after helping Glasgow Warriors win the GUINNESS PRO12.
"Al has an important role to play for Scottish Rugby in helping us develop some of our off-field activities and he'll now have the opportunity to be closer to the business side of sport and I know that is something he is very passionate about.
"He will get the chance to learn more about the business side of the organisation, whilst also acting as an ambassador for Scottish Rugby.”
Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend added: "It's great news that Al has now moved into an important commercial role within Scottish Rugby and will still be heavily involved with the Warriors.
"He will continue to develop the cultural aspect of the club, which he has played a key role in over the last few years.
"We see him playing an important role in supporting our player group and developing our next generation of leaders. He will also be able to bring some new ideas to help grow the club off the field."
