The previous season he was introduced to the Scotland A side in their win against their English counterparts. He qualifies for Scotland through his Dumfries-born paternal grandfather.
Matt arrived at the Melrose club in season 1997/1998, a few months after being a member of the Northern Bulls touring party who played Scotland A. Indeed, he was introduced as a second half replacement in that match – the only player to play both for and against Scotland A in the same season!
Matt played more that 20 games for Northern Transvaal and was in their squad in 1997 when opposition included the British Lions and the Scotland XV. He won his three caps while with Edinburgh but a neck injury little more than a year later forced him out of rugby.
Matt resumed playing with the Leopards, and in the past year he joined the Blue Bulls' Super 12 squad. Earlier this month the 31-year-old prop renewed acquaintances with former colleagues when he visited the Scotland squad on tour in South Africa and subsequently signed for Glasgow Rugby.
