Rory Lamont went over for Glasgow's try

In simple facts and figures Edinburgh took more out of the practice match at Whitecraigs this evening. The Gunners fielded plenty of big shots and won by scoring three tries to Glasgow Warriors' one.

Warriors, however, benefited in using the occasion to bring in back-up players such as Ben Addison from Stirling, Eric Milligan and Steven Duffy from Glasgow Hawks, A J McFarlane and Steven Manning from Ayr, and Calum Cusiter from Boroughmuir.

"It was a good exercise. It gave us the opportunity to try out club players who might be concerned later in the season," Hugh Campbell, Glasgow's head coach, observed. "Edinburgh sent virtually their full squad. But our guys fronted up. It was a good effort."

As a measure of how well those back-up players responded, most of them were on the field through the final quarter while Edinburgh were exerting heavy pressure.

Apart from Duncan Hodge's early penalty goal for the Gunners, all of the points-gathering was packed into 22 minutes bracketing half-time. Rory Lamont started that phase by intercepting just inside his own half and running all the way for a Glasgow try in 29 minutes. But before the interval Edinburgh scored twice. Ben Cairns ran up the right to put the visitors ahead again, and Grant Anderson was driven over from a close-range penalty lineout.

Hodge's two conversions gave Gunners a 17-7 lead at the interval. The stand-off also added the goal points when Dave Hewett charged over from an unopposed take at the lineout tail.

Campbell's opposite number, Frank Hadden, also welcomed the Whitecraigs exercise. "It was valuable match practice for a lot of guys who are now raring to go," the Gunners' coach commented.

Glasgow's next game will be against Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park on Saturday. Six days later the Celtic League campaign begins with a Hughenden match against Newport Gwent Dragons.
