Glasgow Warriors 20 - 16 Edinburgh

GUINNESS PRO14 match played at Scotstoun on Saturday December 21st 2019 | No comments

Zander Fagerson played a big part in Glasgow's win
Glasgow Warriors came out on top in this evening's PRO14 meeting with Edinburgh at Scotstoun.

Warriors left it late with replacement hooker George Turner touching down from a driving maul with just a couple of minutes left on the clock.

Edinburgh led 9-6 going into the last 15 minutes with three penalties from Simon Hickey and Adam Hastings slotting two for Glasgow.

After a neat chip from Adam Hastings, Huw Jones collected and cut a fine line to put replacement scrum-half Ali Price in at the posts.

Hastings kicked the extras but more indiscipline from Warriors - they conceded 15 penalties - gave Edinburgh the platform to hit back through Blair Kinghorn to go back in front.

Warriors didn't give up however and after gaining ground on the left forced a penalty. They turned down the kick for goal and went for the corner to set-up the platform for Turner's try.

That should have been it but in attempting to play down the clock Glasgow gave away another penalty which put the visitors back in the hunt. Edinburgh looked likely to go over for the winning score before man-of-match Zander Fagerson got over the ball to force the penalty and take the spoils for the Warriors.

"The penalty count is way too high," Dave Rennie told Radio Scotland at full-time.

"I could argue a few of them clearly but that's my job. We weren't happy that they piggy-backed a couple of penalties in a row and that allowed them to gain 80 metres.

"I know there have been question marks around our form but we are creating opportunities, we just haven't been clinical enough. So it was good to put a couple away today. It's hurt us in Europe, we've got to make sure we can take confidence from this and build from it.

"It was on the back of a really physical performance. Defensively we were great, really quick off the line. On attack, we carried and cleaned aggressively and generated quick ball that put them under pressure.

"Our counter-ruck was excellent, we want to hunt, but referees aren't rewarding that very often, so sometimes you've got to take space, and Zander Fagerson was the instigator of that. I thought he was outstanding."
