December 20, 2025Glasgow Warriors 24 - 12 EdinburghUnited Rugby Championship match played at Hampden Park on Saturday December 20th 2025 | No comments
![]() Rory Darge went over for Glasgow's second try Glasgow Warriors secured a bonus-point win over old rivals Edinburgh in this afternoon's URC meeting at Hampden Park. Franco Smith's men started quickly, taking control of territory and tempo in the early exchanges. Matt Fagerson crashed over for the opener before Edinburgh replied through Dylan Richardson, but Adam Hastings' conversion meant Glasgow edged into the break two points to the good. The next score was always going to be important and straight after the restart, Glasgow struck. Rory Darge led from the front once again, powering over to spark Hampden into life, and moments later Gregor Hiddleston followed him across the whitewash to put daylight between the sides. Edinburgh briefly threatened to make it uncomfortable when Grant Gilchrist grabbed one back, but any nerves were quickly settled when Seb Stephen bulldozed over late on to seal a bonus-point win and an 1872 Cup advantage of 12 points. As is usually the case with these derby meetings, it wasn't the most spectacular of matches, and it was no surprise all the tries came from the pack, either through pick-and-go graft or good old-fashioned maul work. The numbers told the story: Edinburgh threw themselves into defence with six players making 20-plus tackles, while Glasgow responded in kind with relentless carries across the park. Glasgow dominated much of the first half - 72% territory and 67% possession - but somehow only led by two at the break. Three times the Warriors looked certain to score, only to be held up over the line. Jack Dempsey was denied twice, while Hiddleston was also inches away. Glasgow head coach Franco Smith told BBC Scotland: "A massive, hard-fought victory. We expected Edinburgh to be up for the challenge, the way they've obviously prepared, and they proved it. "They played really well, from a defensive perspective, specifically. We had so many entries in their 22m which we couldn't convert. They ended up prolonging our opportunities to score. We've got quite a bit to work on. "Last week against Toulouse, we were a team that played with the mentality of nothing to lose. Now we have everything to lose. "[Patience] was part of the message. We wanted to create as many opportunities as possible, but Edinburgh snuffed a lot of them out tonight. We'll have to go and look and see how we can improve on that. "What an all-around player and all-around performance [from Ollie Smith]. He kicked the ball miles tonight. "He's played at centre for us, he's played at wing and he's done an excellent job tonight. He's a very valuable asset and good to have him now in our environment for the near future. "I don't think I need to motivate the boys much. They realise how important it is, just from every perspective, is rolling out the best performance there." "It's massive. It is the 1872, it is the derby, it is bragging rights, all that, but first and foremost it's league points," Glasgow back-row Rory Darge told BBC Scotland. "We've learnt over the last few years that you come to the end of the season and you can look back on the ones that you've not won and you can rue them. "Every league point counts. So it's massive for us."
