Glasgow Warriors 31 - 22 Munster

United Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Friday January 30th 2026 | No comments

Josh McKay went over for Glasgow's bonus try
Glasgow Warriors extended their lead at the summit of the URC table with a bonus-point victory over old rivals Munster at Scotstoun this evening.

Tries from Ollie Smith, Dan Lancaster, Jare Oguntibeju and Josh McKay gave the Warriors a bonus point and a 28-5 half-time advantage, with Ethan Coughlan grabbing Munster's lone first-half response.

The visitors rallied after the break through a solo effort from Dan Kelly, before further scores from Brian Gleeson and Diarmuid Kilgallen cut the deficit to just six points.

But Lancaster kept his composure late on, slotting a crucial penalty to halt the Munster momentum and seal a ninth consecutive victory in all competitions for Franco Smith's side.

Munster began with real intent, spending the early exchanges camped on the Glasgow line, but it was the home side who struck first with their opening attack.

A sweeping move from deep released Smith down the left touchline and, despite being shepherded towards the sideline by two defenders, the full-back somehow grounded the ball in acrobatic fashion before being bundled into touch.

Lancaster added a superb conversion from the touchline in blustery conditions, and moments later had the Warriors crowd on their feet again. The fly-half - who impressed throughout - read an attempted pass from opposite number Tony Butler, intercepted and raced clear to score beneath the posts, converting his own try.

Munster hit back soon after, Coughlan showing sharp instincts to intercept a wide pass from Stafford McDowall and sprint in unopposed.

With the wind at their backs, Warriors went in search of further points before the interval. Sustained pressure followed, and eventually Oguntibeju forced his way through a ruck to touch down.

Munster winger Thaakir Abrahams was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on as Glasgow attacked, and the home side made the extra man count. McKay sliced through a gaping hole in the defence to claim the bonus-point try.

There was no shortage of drama after the break, with Angus Fraser and Seb Stephen both denied by the TMO - Fraser held up over the line, and Stephen's solo run ruled out for an earlier knock-on.

Kelly then produced a moment of magic that did count. The Munster centre burst clear from a first-phase scrum move inside his own half and showed electric pace to beat the cover defence and score.

For the first time, Warriors looked under pressure. A misfiring lineout inside their own 22 allowed Gleeson to pounce and race away, before Kilgallen crossed to bring Munster back within six points.

With nerves jangling around Scotstoun, Lancaster stepped up to land a late penalty - a rare sight on the night, but a decisive one - to put the result beyond doubt and cap an entertaining evening for Glasgow fans.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith said: "Obviously very proud of the boys.

"Happy we could get the win in a very important fixture. Munster is a very tough game always.

"For the guys who haven't played as often produce a product like tonight is brilliant.

"The way we stuck to task and kept defending well was important. We're proud of [our winning run] but we've won nothing yet.

"Very excited to finish the block that way.

"I'm really grateful. I thought the young bucks, some of the boys that haven't played that often lately, and the people that came back from the international week, did extremely well to combine and look very fluent.

"I was happy with the result. I'm really, really proud of everybody's contribution.

Stafford McDowall took the man-of-the-match award but for many observers Dan Lancaster was unfortunate not to win the after producing another controlled and confident display.

The stand-off has had to be patient since his move from France but he's shown Warriors may not need to look too far for a replacement for Montpellier-bound Adam Hastings.

"I'm very proud of him tonight," said Smith. "He waited, and we wanted to make sure that he's on par with what we want to do.

"He's still growing. I think the intercept try, you can see the preps done. That was brilliant from his side. He's obviously learned and progressed in the way we want to play in the last two years.

"The fact that he brought a lot of energy, not just in his own play, but also to the team. I think he's a very important step forward this weekend."
