Connacht 15 - 10 Glasgow Warriors

United Rugby Championship match played at Dexcom Stadium on Saturday February 28th 2026 | No comments

Franco Smith was disappointed with the result but praised Connacht's effort
Glasgow Warriors were left frustrated after missing the opportunity to stretch their lead at the top of the URC table, falling to a late defeat against Connacht in Galway.

With second-placed Leinster having lost to Cardiff on Friday, Glasgow travelled to Galway knowing a victory would strengthen their grip on the summit. Instead, Sean Jansen's last-gasp try saw their nine game winning run come to an end.

A tightly contested first half saw both teams apply sustained pressure, but Glasgow went into the break trailing by three points after Sam Gilbert's penalty handed Connacht a narrow 3-0 advantage.

The momentum swung early in the second half when Connacht lock Joe Joyce was shown a yellow card for a high tackle on Ben Afshar. Glasgow capitalised on the numerical advantage just before the hour mark, as Scotland wing Kyle Rowe crossed for the game's opening try. However, in difficult windy conditions, Adam Hastings was unable to convert.

Gilbert missed a penalty to put Connacht back in front, but Glasgow responded when Rowe produced a moment of real quality, gathering a crossfield kick from Dan Lancaster and beat two defenders to score his second try of the match.

Once again, Hastings narrowly missed the conversion, leaving the door open. Connacht levelled the contest at 10-10 in controversial circumstances with Josh Murphy awarded a try despite touching down short of the line.

With the final play of the match, Jansen crashed over the line to seal a dramatic victory for the hosts.

Despite the defeat, Glasgow remain four points clear at the top of the table.

Speaking after the game, Glasgow head coach Franco Smith admitted it was a disappointing result, but felt it was a step in the right direction from a squad missing 12 players on Scotland duty.

He said: "We demand a lot from the young players. In the long term, I think the last 10-20 minutes of this game will serve us better than a win with a large margin. We have a lot to learn from here.

"But I want to start by saying I thought Connacht were very ,very good. They made 261 tackles with a 94% completion rate. That's massive. So, you can see their heart and soul.

"Connacht at home, as we expected, are a tough team to play against and to beat. And the fact that they've produced a tenacious defensive effort like they did, I must tip my hat for that.

"This was a proper game of rugby. I said to the boys before, it's got a Test match-like feel to it and it was really some quality rugby both sides produced."
