Glasgow Warriors 33 - 33 Ulster

United Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Saturday October 3rd 2026 | No comments

Glasgow Warriors and Ulster shared the spoils in a thrilling 10-try encounter at Scotstoun this evening, with both sides left to reflect on missed opportunities after an action-packed 33-33 draw.

The Warriors were reduced to 13 inside the final 10 minutes after Rory Darge and Sam Talakai were both shown yellow cards, with Ulster capitalising to draw level through Juarno Augustus.

Yet Franco Smith's side held firm for the remainder of the contest and even came within the width of an upright of snatching victory, George Horne's late penalty striking the post with four minutes remaining.

It capped a second half in which Glasgow had earlier overturned a 12-point deficit, scoring three tries in a clinical nine-minute spell to move 33-26 ahead.

Josh McKay, Kyle Rowe - twice - Jamie Dobie and Talakai crossed for the Warriors, with Horne adding four conversions as Glasgow maintained their unbeaten start to the URC campaign.

Ulster made the brighter start and opened the scoring after just four minutes, Bryn Ward powering over from a short-range penalty before Jack Murphy added the conversion.

Glasgow's response was immediate. A flowing attacking move created space for McKay to round off the score, with Horne's conversion bringing the sides level.

The Warriors were then reduced to 14 when Dan Lancaster was shown yellow for a deliberate knock-on, and Ulster took advantage as Ethan McIlroy found a gap in the Glasgow defence to cross.

Back came the hosts, Stafford McDowall producing an excellent pass to release Rowe for Glasgow's second try, Horne converting to put the Warriors 14-12 ahead.

Ulster, however, had the final say of the opening 40 minutes. After a Glasgow penalty was reversed following an incident involving Horne and Tom Stewart, the visitors worked their way upfield before McIlroy's offload sent Murphy over.

The fly-half converted his own try to give Ulster a 19-14 advantage at the interval.

The visitors stretched their advantage six minutes after the restart, debutant Chay Mullins finishing off another Ulster attack before Murphy's conversion opened up a 26-14 lead.

The momentum then swung firmly towards Glasgow as Ulster were reduced to 13.

Ben Carson was shown yellow for a high tackle on McDowall, before McIlroy followed him to the sin-bin for a deliberate knock-on.

The Warriors capitalised immediately, Dobie racing over in the corner after Glasgow created space out wide, with Horne converting to cut the deficit to five.

Having then been held up from a rolling maul, Glasgow maintained the pressure and Talakai powered his way over from close range. Horne's conversion edged the Warriors back in front at 28-26.

Rowe then grabbed his second of the evening, racing clear for Glasgow's fifth try to stretch the advantage to 33-26.

The contest took another turn inside the final 10 minutes as Ulster laid siege to the Glasgow line.

Darge and Talakai were both sent to the sin-bin following a sustained spell of pressure, leaving the Warriors to see out the closing stages with 13 players.

Ulster eventually found a way through when Augustus forced his way over, Nathan Doak converting to level the scores at 33-33.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Glasgow then had the opportunity to win it when Carson was penalised for holding on at the breakdown.

Horne stepped up from the tee, only for his penalty attempt to rebound from the upright.

Ulster mounted one final attack, but the Glasgow defence held firm, with Zac Ward bundled into touch after the clock had moved into the red to bring a breathless contest to an end.

Both teams will look back at the game and see positives but also rue the indiscipline and poor decision making on display.

Reflecting on the match, Glasgow Head Coach Franco Smith felt the result was a fair reflection of an encounter in which both sides produced moments of quality alongside early-season errors.

"Both teams played and went out and played," said Smith.

"Like I said, there's a difference between pre-season games, then start-of-the-season games and then in-season games, and I think it was a classic start-of-the-season game.

"I thought both teams made errors, but both teams also really showcased rugby.

"Both sides of the ball, there's a lot for us to work on, but I mean also, I think, for Ulster. So the result probably reflects that best."

Smith admitted he was frustrated by aspects of Glasgow's performance, but took encouragement from the way his side defended when reduced to 13 players late in the contest.

"It's like kissing your sister, I suppose," he joked when asked how a draw felt.

"But no, definitely, I don't mind the way the score was at the moment. We need to improve.

"We've introduced some players and we kick on from last week, and this is a very important ingredient in the way we approach this next week.

"If you just sail through another game like this, then next week maybe we can challenge the boys a little bit more to dig deeper.

"The way they've done in the second part of the game when they were 13, and the way we defended then, if we can see that from the start.

"So it's a start, and I know this is definitely not a loss. We got two points here. Somewhere down this season that's going to count for a lot."

Game management will be one of the key areas addressed when the squad returns to training.

"Our game management is the first thing," said Smith.

"It comes a little bit from me. I asked the boys to ask questions a little bit further out, so I'll take responsibility for that.

"But we changed it in the second part of the game and unfortunately gave another easy turnover.

"I think it's an easy fix, easier than most people would think out there. It's just hard work and good understanding and good communications.

"We've got good people in the changing room. They will be ready to fire on Monday."

Smith was also encouraged by elements of Glasgow's attacking play, while highlighting the lineout as another area for improvement.

"We lost a couple of lineouts, well contested by Ulster, which is something we'll work on and we'll be much sharper next week around that.

"Start of the season, there's so much rugby. There's hopefully 27 games still ahead for us.

"I'm happy that we have something to work on next week."

Sam Talakai, who crossed for his first try of the season, shared his Head Coach's frustration at not turning opportunities into a victory.

"I think just collectively as a squad we've just got to be better," said Talakai.

"We've got to ice those moments when we get the chance.

"It's a draw, but it's quite a disappointing result for us."

Asked whether Glasgow felt they should have taken all five points, the prop added: "Should have, should have, but we didn't.

"We've got to review hard and probably cop a bit of an earful from Franco in there.

"But we've got to be better as a squad if we're going to push for higher honours towards the back end of the year."

Sione Tuipulotu, making his first appearance of the campaign following his summer break, was similarly disappointed despite enjoying his return to action.

"It was just good to be back out there," he said.

"I've been pretty excited all week. I've had a good break and I'm a bit disappointed about, I suppose, the draw.

"Drawing out here feels like losing for us.

"But credit to Ulster. They had the will and want tonight, I feel like, over us, and that's not normal for us to be out here and the other team have a little bit more will and want.

"So we'll have to look at ourselves, I think, this week a little bit."
