Glasgow Warriors made the trip south to face Newcastle Red Bulls at Kingston Park with the hosts winning 47-31 in an entertaining friendly encounter.

A youthful Glasgow side showed plenty of fight in their first pre-season outing, battling back strongly in the second half against an experienced Newcastle side.

The hosts made the perfect start, Sam Graham crossing inside the opening minute before Kerr Johnston responded for Glasgow after 10 minutes, Matthew Urwin's conversion levelling the scores at 7-7.

Newcastle then took control of the contest, with Chris Harris, Josh Hodge, Tom Christie and Christian Wade all crossing before the interval as the hosts opened up a 35-7 half-time advantage.

George McGuigan extended the lead shortly after the restart, but Glasgow responded impressively. Guy Rogers sparked the fightback with two tries in eight minutes, his second coming after he brilliantly gathered Johnston's cross-field kick before beating Christian Wade to the line.

Jamie McAughtrie then powered over from a driving maul as the Warriors cut the deficit to 40-24, only for Ollie Spencer to halt Glasgow's momentum with Newcastle's seventh try.

The Warriors had the final say, however. Harry Provan's kick-chase earned his side a five-metre scrum, from which Callum Reidy sniped over from close range. Urwin converted from the touchline to complete the scoring at 47-31.

Glasgow continued to attack until the final whistle, with Reidy and Urwin almost combining for a spectacular late score, as a young Warriors squad signed off an encouraging first hit-out of pre-season.
