New Warriors will follow Weir's way

Duncan Weir will skipper Glasgow for the first time
Duncan Weir will skipper Glasgow for the first time when he leads out his teammates to take on Connacht at Scotstoun tomorrow.

The stand-off made his Glasgow debut back in 2010 and has gone on to make 158 appearances in his two spells with the club.

The veteran's experience will come in useful when he leads a Glasgow side that contains a number of other players at the opposite end on their careers.

Centre, Duncan Munn, will make his first start for the club - he's come off the bench twice - and among Glasgow's replacements there are three potential debutants - back-rower Macenzzie Duncan, hooker Joe Roberts and winger Kerr Johnston.

Fin Richardson is a bit older at 26, but this will be only his second start for Warriors, and he has the tough task of wearing Zander Fagerson's number three shirt.

Speaking in The Scotsman, Weir said: "I'm really eager and happy to try and pull these guys through and give them the best opportunity to shine on a match day because that's the next step for them. They train so hard every week. They're so patient in doing their homework on all the opposition trends and their styles of play. It's a huge opportunity for them to show the coaches what they can do in a Glasgow shirt.

"The coaches have often talked about it in the last couple of weeks, it's just a different bum on the seat on the bus. The roles are the same if it's Zander Fagerson starting at tighthead or if it's Fin on Sunday. Their job title, what they have to do for the team, is the exact same."

After a couple of Champions Cup matches it'll be Glasgow's first URC game since defeat away to Edinburgh and Weir thinks the young Warriors can strengthen the club's hold on second place in the table.

"It's exciting. It's a massive stage for them to come on and show what they can do. And, like I said before, all our systems are so well ingrained in us."
