Franco Smith is excited to see what his new-look Glasgow Warriors side can do
Franco Smith says he's excited to see what his new-look Glasgow Warriors side can produce when Munster visit Scotstoun on Friday night.

With 15 Scotland squad members unavailable, the Warriors head coach has made 10 changes to the side that defeated Zebre in Parma last weekend. Josh McKay returns from injury, while Sione Vailanu is set for his first appearance of the season from the bench, alongside potential debutants Dylan Cockburn and Matthew Urwin.

"I'm excited for the players that haven't had a chance and are fresh," Smith told Scotland Rugby News.

"I tried to plan it in a way that we have as many fresh bodies and eager bodies as possible this week. And there's even guys like Kyle Rowe who have not played much since he's been injured.

"Stafford hasn't played in the last two weeks. And at the same time, we've got Sione Vailanu back after a long break. We've got Jamie Bhatti and Murphy [Walker], who's hardly started, back playing.

"Everybody's fresh and eager and managed into this last game so that we can maintain the energy and the creativity that I think it's needed to be competitive."

Smith also outlined what supporters can expect from academy duo Cockburn and Urwin.

"Dylan has physically grown a lot and he's really applied himself. He's a good ball carrier, a good defender. He adds a lot of weight to the set piece. So I'm excited for him to make that next step.

"I definitely think he came in at the beginning of the season as somebody that can progress because of the physical attributes that he has. He still has to learn and grow, I suppose, in this environment. But tomorrow will be a good opportunity to start from there after getting started on his journey."

On Urwin, Smith added: "He is a good footballer. He's grown. He also worked really hard in the gym to get his weight up to professional rugby standards. He's got all the potential.

"Matty is maturing nicely from a decision-making position. So he understands well what we want to do and we'd like to see if he can progress."

Smith is also delighted to have Vailanu back after a second knee operation.

"He got tackled from in front and he injured his PCL and took a lot of time to get him back. Last year he was eight or nine months out and we got him back and he hobbled about.

"He had to go back and get surgery done again on it. Now he's gone through the same rehab process again and he's finally back. We're excited to see what he can bring."
