The opening exchanges were dominated by a kicking battle and set-piece disruptions, with both sides struggling for momentum. Scotland struck first when Gregor Hiddleston powered over from close range, but Italy responded through a maul try before Gasperini added a second to give the hosts a 14-7 lead. Rowe's first try in the corner late in the half narrowed the gap to 14-12 at the break.
Scotland came out strongly after half-time and took the lead when Cameron Redpath finished off a driving maul. Italy hit back immediately through Gallorini and extended their advantage with a Montemauri penalty to move 24-19 ahead.
Scotland refused to relent, and Rowe's second try after a slick attacking move brought the scores level at 24-24. Both sides pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but strong Italian defence and late turnovers ensured the contest ended honours even
