Jare Oguntibeju enjoying new key role

Jare Oguntibeju has explained the difference between playing four and five
To the layperson, the duties of both lock positions can seem identical, but Glasgow's Jare Oguntibeju has explained the difference between playing four and five.

Franco Smith values versatility and Oguntibeju has featured in both second-row roles this season. While Smith often says he "doesn't look at the back of the shirt", Oguntibeju has taken on added responsibility at five by calling the line-outs.

"My first time calling was the Scarlets game," Oguntibeju told Scotland Rugby News. "It's a lot more thinking, even under fatigue as well, because there's a lot more factors. At four, you just play rugby, really. At five, you mix the calls and you just have to act on what the five does.

"At five, you do more of the thinking. You have to think about what line out, where you are on the pitch.

"I think I'm becoming more comfortable in the role now. I've got some of the best line out callers ahead of me in Alex Samuel and Scott Cummings. Their line out minds are very good. It's insane how good they are.

"They see spaces and they teach you what to look for. It's a role that I like. I think I've become more comfortable in that role. I'm happy to play the four or the five, it just adds more to my game."

Oguntibeju is expected to be involved for Glasgow against Ulster this weekend in the final round of the URC regular season. A bonus-point win would secure top spot and home advantage in the play-offs.

Asked about the opportunity, the 24-year-old said: "It's good. I think we're highly favoured that we are able to still be in the driver's seat.

"It's good, it's all about us, we don't have to worry about relying on anyone else. That works for us, we know what we are capable of. We just need to go out and focus on ourselves when we go down to Ulster this week and just do us."
