Cummings and Dobie 'back in the mix'

Jamie Dobie could feature against Connacht
Scott Cummings and Jamie Dobie are expected to return from injury for Glasgow Warriors against Connacht on Friday in a significant boost for Franco Smith ahead of the URC quarter-final at Scotstoun.

Noth Scotland internationals have been sidelined for several months after picking up injuries during the Six Nations. Dobie dislocated his shoulder against England while Cummings suffered a calf issue and then endured a setback in training after initially being expected back during Glasgow's South Africa tour.

However, both players returned to full training last week, and assistant coach Scott Forrest has offered an encouraging update.

"They're back in the mix," he confirmed.

"We had a few days off but trained Monday and Tuesday last week. Certainly Jamie Dobie and Scott Cummings trained last week. So it's more that we just need to see how they react today. I think some of the injured boys were in at the tail end of last week with the S&C and the medical team to top up their loads that they've not had since they've been out.

"So firstly, I think it's great to see them back on the pitch, it kind of gives everyone a lift. We'll just wait and see whether they're actually in the mix this week, or obviously if we get past this weekend, then is it going to be the week after."

Glasgow have taken an increasingly cautious approach to injury updates as the campaign has gone on, and there are still concerns over a handful of players.

Gregor Brown is unlikely to be available for Friday after suffering a calf problem on his return against Ulster, although Matt Fagerson is expected to feature.

"Aye, it's a tough one," said Forrest on Brown. "It was his first game back from his hamstring injury and he tweaked his calf against Ulster. He didn't train last week because we only trained on Monday and Tuesday as a team. So it's really just a case of assessing it.

"He was in a boot straight after the game, which I think is just very protective at this point. Anyone that's got any sort of ankle, foot or calf type injury goes into a boot. Him and Ben Afshar were the same but they're both out of a boot now so it's really just to see how they react this week."

On Fagerson, Forrest added: "Yeah that was probably a little bit more of a precaution. He trained in the Ulster week at the start of the week and then pulled up towards the end of the week, nothing too serious. He just felt his groin a little bit, so again, he should be back in the mix."

Meanwhile, Huw Jones faces a race against time to play again for Glasgow before his summer move to Toulon. The British & Irish Lion has yet to return to training as he continues his recovery from a foot injury.

"Again he's still recovering in terms of his foot injury," said Forrest.

"He's not been on the pitch this week so he didn't train last week. He will hopefully play again this season but whether it's this week or semi-final, again if we get there, then we'll just wait and see. But he's still being led by the S&C and the medical team."
