Edinburgh latest stop for Ross Ford

Posted by Editor on October 18, 2007 11:34 AM | 22 comments | Print | E-mail author

Ross Ford is off to Edinburgh
Scotland hooker Ross Ford will be playing with Edinburgh Rugby this season.

Ford had been announced as a Glasgow signing during the summer but with Edinburgh's return to SRU control the hooker will be moving to the capital.

Goes against everything that SRU, Sean and Ross said. Very, very disappointing to hear of more shuffling of the pack even if we do have the position well covered. Who else is going to the capital despite what was said? ..and does my Warriors season ticket get me into Edinburgh games? ;)

Do you want it to?

Well, I was looking forward to seeing Ross Ford play and the SRU did encourage me by email and in writing to buy my season ticket since he was one of the players I could go to watch... so I reckon I should get into Edinburgh.

Goes to show the security that players have in their contracts...or lack thereof. Apparently with the contracts there is a clause that the SRU can relocate players as desired, regardless of their commitments contractually to another SRU pro side. Therefore if the SRU want their "golden boys", Edinburgh, to succeed, they have the authority to relocate players to thier liking.
Incidentally, interesting how of the 8 that were cut from the World Cup prelim squad were 6 Glasgow lads.
In any case, the Warriors have the edge in the competiton, and I hope they put 50 past the Gunners.

Feeling a bit strong, Gary?

Little bit of sour grapes I think.

Much as I would like to see the SRU take a back seat and not meddle with the proteams I do think it would have been very foolish of them to have left three of the four international hookers at the one team and have none at their other team. I therefore think that the SRU should possibly be commended for realising that this was a foolish position to remain in and for doing something to rectify it.

the "job security" was that Ross was assigned to Glasgow when Borders closed; rather than being told to "find a club". I'm happy with that. Reading between the lines I always felt he would be going to Gurners - for the reasons stated on here.

Everyone knows Edinburgh and their players get preferential treatment from the SRU. So why the surprise, Edinburgh need on the best players.

I wonder how long it would be before this started again, all of a sudden "you" have forgotten about all your summer signings. Never mind I will parcel some boxes of tissues through to the arena next week :p

That's the point Gary .. we haven't forgotten that Ross Ford was one of our summer signings!

this may sound a bit random but who cares??? we have two great hookers now who will get more chances. Good Luck to Ross with Edinburgh...they need all the help they can get!

We don't have two great hookers. Why couldn't Hall have been sent back over there.

look back - Ross Ford took a very long time to come out with the "great to be a Warrior". I Thought at the time the lack of early announcements specific to him said it all. Young lad, job gone, didn't know where he wanted to go or what to do, too late really for a contarct out of scotland but did not really come across as committed to Glasgow. Hall on the other hand wanted to come to Glasgow. Which one do you want - the one who wamts to be here or the one who doesn't really ?

and good luck to Ross anyway -potential to be great player - if he gets his throwing in right!

Not really - I spoke to him for the Glaswegian a day after he signed and he did say how delighted he was to sign.

To be honest, I'm surprised by the reaction at this. We've known all summer that we had too good hookers, and that something would have to give. None of them, especially the 3 internationalists, would benefit from not even making it to the bench or irregular starts.

Fergus has had a huge opportunity this summer to be involved in the RWC squad, and hopefully this will have really whetted his appetite to stake a claim for the international no 2 shirt. Therefore lets get behind our 3 hookers - 2 of whom we know are Glasgow through and through, and Hall should be fit soon to prove himself too.

It would have been better if the SRU press release, including Ford's comments (which I'm sure will have been edited before being included), had been a little more open about the situation, but its only what we've come to expect from the SRU PR department after all.

Lets get behind Ferg & Eric, and stop worrying about Ford!

Point taken Vic ..although I don't know how our hookers can be "too good"! ;) I'm surprised you don't understand the reaction. However, despite what I have said, I reckon Fergus is the best (where is Hugh when you need him to back you up?) . Of course we'll get behind our own! I'm sure Ford did not make any comments which were not written by SRU spin merchants who are just not very good.

You have missed the point. You said Ross took a while in saying how delighted he was in signing for Glasgow. I merely responded by saying his statement was given shortly after his move to the Warriors was announced.

Less of abusive attitude as well please.
