The decision for Glasgow and Kiwi Searancke to part company came at a meeting between the coach and Jim Telfer, the SRU's director of rugby, yesterday. The outcome seems to have been a surprise to Searancke as until Monday night he had been preparing for the match with Edinburgh on Friday.

The news also seems to have surprised the Glasgow players. Scotland full-back Moffat">Stuart Moffat admitted: "This is the first I've heard of the news; none of the players have been informed. I don't want to say anymore until I know more about it."

Gordon Simpson, the Scotland flanker, said: "This is a hell of a shock to the system. Kiwi has brought a hard edge to Glasgow, new ideas and a fresh way of thinking."

Sean Lineen is still believed to be in line for a coaching position at Hughenden and he said yesterday: "I understand I'm just one of the candidates for the backs coach post," said Lineen, "and that they are still to advertise it. But the news about Kiwi has come as a surprise. I spoke with Kiwi about the job initially and I have to say I warmed to him. He had a lot of enthusiasm and it's disappointing that it has ended in this way. But it doesn't change my situation at all. I am interested in being involved at a professional level now, and with or without Kiwi it was always going to be a huge challenge."

Others thought to be among the favourites for the Hughenden job are Hugh Campbell, Shade Munro, Henry Edwards and Lineen's current coaching partner, Iain Paxton.
