New fitness coach for Glasgow

Mark Bitcon, 25, has joined Glasgow Warriors as athletic performance co-ordinator.

He starts pre-season fitness training by travelling with the team to a high-intensity training camp at the Royal Marines' base in Arbroath next week.

Mark, who comes from Wigan, was strength and conditioning coach at Wasps for two years. During that time they won the Zurich Premiership title twice and the Parker Pen Challenge Cup and the Heineken Cup in successive years.

In moving from Wasps, Mark is following in the footsteps of Kenny Logan, the former Scotland international wing, whose return to Glasgow was confirmed earlier this month. Explaining his decision to move north, Mark said: "It was the right time to leave Wasps, and I was looking for a new challenge. I had a few offers to work in the Premiership, but having spoken to Kenny Logan, this attracted me.

"Fitness training made a massive difference to the Wasps team, not just in terms of physical fitness but in positive mental outlook and professionalism. Scottish rugby is at a pivotal stage, and I see a lot of potential and enthusiasm. In many ways it is similar to the situation at Wasps two years ago. I’m looking forward to the challenges the new season will bring."

Holding a degree in sports science and an MSc in physiology, Mark has also worked for Bolton Wanderers, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL, and at the British Olympic Medical Centre, testing athletes in advance of the 2000 Games in Sydney.

Hugh Campbell, Glasgow's head coach, said: "Attracting a fitness coach of this calibre to Glasgow is a significant achievement. We're expecting Mark to bring a new intensity and work-rate to the team that will benefit us over what will be a highly demanding season.

"Mark's experience speaks for himself. I'm looking forward to working with him in the months ahead."

This appointment can only produce great results and I'm looking forward to his work. On the other hand him being here wont allow tiredness to be an excuse for bad performances!

I understand the players have been worked hard at RM Condor over the past week. Press-ups in the North Sea at Arbroath beach can do terrible things to a man.

Yep, (someone from Arbroath RFC here) they were beasted to bits by Royal Marine PT Jon Telford. They were a wee bit knackered after doing sprints up 30 foot dunes!
