In the Sunday Herald he discusses John Barclay's call up to the national squad. His call up came as a surprise to many in Glasgow, who have yet to see the 18 year old play a game at professional level, after a long lay off due to injury.
"I see guys like John coming into the game and I know they're not going to get the wider opportunities I had. It will be a big loss to guys like that not to experience rugby as an amateur.
"I'd hate to see those young guys getting to the end of their playing careers and realising what they've missed. It would be sad if the better opportunities that rugby can give you are lost to those young guys, who are maybe pushed too hard too young"
Gordon goes on to discuss his brother's decision to retire from professional rugby last season.
"Alan was never as intense about rugby as I was," he says. "He played because he loved running at people with the ball, not standing around all day hitting tackle bags. He took a decision to get out and I respect him for that.
"Do I envy him? In some respects I do, but in other respects he envies me as well. There are bits of his life that I'd love to have, and vice-versa. If I could just turn up for an international, play the game, then do it all again the next week then that would be just fine. Collect the cheque at the end and go home."
