Peter Wright thought Stewart Smith had more potential than any of the Glasgow backs
Stewart Smith, the Hawks centre who has been discussed as a future player for Glasgow Warriors, has decided to sign up with the Waikato Rugby Academy.

As reported on the Glasgow Hawks website, Smith, who played for Hawks against Heriots on Sunday, is taking up the place he was offered last summer when he played for the Waikato U21s in the NPC age group matches.

Stewart came through the Glasgow Academy and played for Glasgow Accies in last season's B.T. Shield Final.

From Iain Morrison's Scotland on Sunday article on Stewart

"It seems unlikely that the city side will let a player of Smith's potential to slip through their hands without at least putting up a fight, even if that means going cap in hand to Murrayfield for more money."

Wonder what went wrong?

It strikes me as ironic that, if things go well for him in NZ, he could be eligible for them after 3 years. Perhaps his lack of a suitable drugs history and their being able to actually watch him play made Murrayfield reluctant to find the cash to keep him in Scotland?

It would have only taken a small investment to have retained him.again we send out all the wrong messages-bring in an Austrlian with a drugs record but don't support home talent.
If the SRU wish to embrace local authority support they are going to have to get their act together.
How does the message on the home page of the offical Glasgow website "Scotland against drugs "square with this

The SRU, sad to say, are making a mockery of Scottish Rugby. Scottish rugby is falling deeper and deeper all the time.

Signing up rugby league stalets with previous widely known drug problems to play union over here when he's never even attempted to play union before. Another expensive SRU "project" to fail?

Taking huge whacks of cash off genuine rugby fans for Internationals.

Continually tinkering with rugby development at all levels, youth development particularly.

Moving Scottish under 21 Internationals away from club rugby grounds to the "home of football" the new Brockville Stadium in Falkirk!

Constantly changing the rules to suit the pro teams over the club sides of Scotland.

The list is endless, yet the same suits parade around the media suggesting ewverything's going well!
