Scottish Rugby could be record breakers
Thanks to a cast of enthusiastic players Scottish Rugby this afternoon succeeded in its ambitious 24-hour continuous rugby game in Glasgow's George Square.

Now we are awaiting confirmation from the Guinness Book of Records to establish whether a world record has been set.

Almost 700 people (including two streakers!) were involved in "Scrum in the Square" playing games of non-contact Tag Rugby for 24 hours from 12 noon yesterday.

Their efforts have raised a considerable four figure sum – the money is still being counted – for the BBC's Children in Need appeal which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, as all competitors were asked to make a donation to the appeal before playing.

Colin Reid, from Scottish Rugby’s Community Marketing department, said: "The whole event went brilliantly and we're indebted to all the players who included club players, students, mums and daughters, fathers and sons, a nurse who'd just come off night-shift, the Caledonian Thebans and Strathclyde Police for their support.

"Off duty Strathclyde Police officers played at three in the morning. Their coach was impressed by the turnout – there were 26 players present, which he said was more than they got for a usual training session!

"Hopefully as an omen for Saturday's Abbey Autumn Test at Hampden Park 'Scotland' scored 1,158 tries compared to 'Australia's' 1,133 during Scrum in the Square and that was after 'Scotland' lost the toss and played uphill for 24 hours.

"This was a unique event and we are waiting confirmation from the Guinness Book of Records to see if we have set a world record.

"Overall it was a hugely positive experience which helped to promote rugby and also raised money for Children in Need," Reid added.
