The Scottish professional players association has expressed "surprise and concern" over the decision by the SRU and IRFU to break up the Celtic League for the season 2005/06 due to the WRU decision to play in the Powergen Cup.

The SPRA statement said that it is "concerned that this will lead to serious welfare issues for the players and shall be seeking clarification from the SRU as to how the players could be affected. The players ultimately want to play rugby and by doing so compete in a meaningful competition that caters for all professional players in Scotland."

The statement continued: "Whilst we appreciate the situation is still very much in negotiation and that the SRU are still unclear as to how matters will conclude -it is vital that the SPRA and SRU communicate so that one of the major stakeholders, the players are not left out of the loop."
