There were strong hints last night that Gordon, who captains the Lions for the third time, and fellow Scot Chris Cusiter, a replacement, are in the frame for places in the Test 22 against New Zealand on Saturday, but these hints come with a warning. Positive noises about Scottish players have been made throughout the tour without leading to a Test place.
There is still a chance, of course, that today's game could propel a small number of players into the 22 for Saturday's Test, with Chris Cusiter the most likely to be promoted when the team is announced tomorrow, on account of his role as a substitute in the second-string team. Gordon made it clear that, with previous tours being marred by poor midweek displays, his side want to finish with an unblemished record.
"This is a huge step up from the last couple of games against Southland and Manawatu, so it's a tough one to finish with, but we are determined to end the tour with an unbeaten record," said the captain in today's Scotsman.
"There has been a great rapport in this group with some great characters and while we wanted that to provide a lift for the Test side, it was also to make sure that we could come together well in quite a short space of time and win games.
"Everyone was down at the weekend with the Test series lost, but the guys performed better and we want to show that we're capable of winning big games out here. That is what this final week is all about. My only experience of playing at Eden Park was losing to New Zealand with Scotland in 2000, so I'd like to know what it feels like to win here. It's a great stadium with a great history.
"It is tremendous to be given the chance to captain a Lions team again and while myself and everyone else have always been pushing for Test places this is a great achievement for me and I'm looking forward to a big challenge of leading this side to another victory."
