Chance for youngsters to stake their claim

John Beattie is one of two teenagers in the Glasgow team to face Bourgoin
Glasgow coach Hugh Campbell thinks his young Warriors can rise to the occasion when they tak eon French high flyers Bourgoin tomorrow night.

With the international back row of Jon Petrie, Donnie Macfadyen and Andy Wilson already out, and Calvin Howarth, the fly-half/full-back, nursing a broken ankle, Glasgow will go into tomorrow night's match with Bourgoin in the Stade Pierre Rajon minus three first-choice backs - Scott Barrow, Rory Lamont and Mike Roberts - and props Ben Prescott and Euan Murray.

Stuart Corsar, the young Aberdeen prop signed as an apprentice in the summer, goes straight in after recovering from injury, a major boost as it emerged that Lloyd Campbell-McBride, an Australian prop signed only recently to provide cover, has returned to Queensland after an old sternum injury flared up.

Hugh has two Scotland caps in Dan Parks and Graeme Beveridge at half-back, but an inexperienced back row in teenagers John Beattie and John Barclay, and Paul Dearlove, and new-look back three of Andy Craig, Hefin O'Hare and Colin Shaw. Colin has to make the step-up to European rugby from Glasgow Hawks 2nds, where he played last week, while John Barclay returns to the starting line-up after playing club rugby with Stirling County.

Hugh said in todays edition of The Scotsman: "We picked up a few injuries late on against Llanelli and, on top of our international back row, losing Rory Lamont and Mike Roberts out of the back three is a bit of a blow.

"Euan had a re-occurrence of his post-concussion symptoms, light headedness, and while he could be fit and medical advice suggests he'll be fine soon, we will take no risks whatsoever.

"We are still looking at the ERC rules to see whether we can bring anyone else in, but they are pretty tight and I don't think we can. We are down to just 23 fit players and some of them haven't been playing much recently.

"Really, we should have a back-up team and enough players to run our own second team, but we don't have the resources for that at the moment so we rely on the goodwill of the clubs as much as possible.

"The clubs are in a difficult position, especially Glasgow Hawks who are going well in their league, so there's no blame attached; it's just the system is not what it could or should be. The fact is we are still under-resourced compared to our opponents, but if we want to move forward in Scotland we have to have that back-up and have an environment where we're driving players to the highest possible standard.

"Edinburgh have slightly better resources than we have, financially, and so have been able to run more back-up games than we have. We wanted more [as Scotland's top seed] but were told no, and there was no explanation from the previous director of rugby."

However, Hugh refused to be downcast about the prospect of taking on one of France's form teams in their own backyard.

"We do have a very young squad and inexperience is something we have to deal with this season, but this is a great opportunity for these players to get European experience," he added.

"They may not have experience, but they certainly have ability and I'm sure they will rise to the occasion."

I repeat the question asked elsewhere. Where is Stevie Swindall?

why if we only have 23 fit players, is eddie maclaughlin being ignored

He wasn't selected in the Heineken Squad of 36 players.

Steve Swindall is though, and he's not listed among the injured. So as others are asking, where is he?

I don't know (shrugs)

Swindall is not injured, has not been selected against Bourgoin and not released to Glasgow Hawks. Has he been a naughty boy?

Almost as bizarre - Campbell-McBride was included in the Heineken Cup pool but has since been sent back to Australia. How much more money wasted on colonials?

Once more you jump in with both feet about "colonials". Any money in the deal for McBride was based on fitness and availability to play . So as he didn't play , and suffered a recurrence of an old injury and therefore wasn't fit.......

Perhaps Swindall is not good enough?

Posted by hugh on October 21, 2005 09:59 AM | Reply to this comment

if that is the case why then not released to Hawks to help build back up

Maybe these guys picked have earned there postion in the side and are good enough to take that next step for all us Glasgow supporters we hope so. You people should stop judging before they have a chance you might just be eating some humble pie. Go Glasgow lead them well Parksy

i was not a fan of swindall at first but having watched him several times, have changed my opinion. i think he looks fitter and sharper than when he first signed and i can't understand why he is knowhere to be seen and barclay is in the side. i know barclay is open side, however, swindall is a better back row player.

So, Grumpy, you know that nothing was paid out on Campbell-McBride, nothing on air fares, nothing on board and lodging, nothing on medical diagnoses and treatments? Remember that a Glasgow apprentice is paid £6,000 per annum. That's not much board and lodging, not many medical appointments, nor many Antipodean air fares.

What is the answer re Stevie Swindall? Illness or discipline?

I don't know why Stevie Swindall hasn't been selected. But I could speculate. Last time he and Barclay played we embarrassed because of missed tackles round the fringes of the scrum. mayb- just maybe, the coaches have gone for Dearloves experience on the blind side and Barclay as a proper openside. Beattie in his proper position as No8. Sub for back row - Hayter -who can also cover lock. Personally I would start with Hayter who has been our best forward evry time he's been on the field this season. But there really is no need for a conspiracy theory every tiem a player is left out. If there is another problem maybe we'll be told, maybe it'll be kept in-house.

I just thought that, if fit, he would at least have been on the bench. Watching the match on TV, I saw he was a water-carrier.
