Scott in Biggar colours
In this month's Rugby World, Glasgow and Scotland hooker Scott Lawson talks about his move into international rugby.

As with so many interviews with Scott, the discussion soon drifts to the subject of size, and his perceived lack of it in the eyes of some (other than those who've watched him play).

"Size doesn't matter," says Scott. "I've had all that stuff about not being big enough, not being strong enough," he sighs. "But I'm confident I can survive the rigours of international rugby.

"Look at Lee Mears, the Bath hooker, who's just been called up into the England squad," adds Scott. "He's not a massive guy (5ft 9in). Obviously a player like Steve Thompson is, but he's the exception rather than the rule."

"Big hookers can sometimes be carried by a team even if their lineout throwing isn't that good. With me, I know my core skills, my throwing and my scrummaging, have to be spot on. My throwing, in particular, has become one of my real strengths in the last season or so. Glasgow brought in a specialist throwing coach (James Wade of Sale Sharks) and he changed my technique. The results have been excellent."

Scott goes on to talk about his first Scotland cap which he won against Romania in Bucharest, rounding off his debut with a try.

"I ploughed over from a driving lineout. You can write that I ran 90 metres if you want, though."

In the crowd to see his first cap were Scott's mum and dad, girlfriend and several members of Biggar rugby club. "That's where I started playing rugby," says Scott. "It's a small and unfashionable club, but they've done so much to help me and it's an honour to be the first player from Biggar to play for Scotland."

The complete interview is in this month's Rugby World, available at all good newsagents, and some rubbish ones as well.
