Sean makes the case for the defence

John Barclay topped the tackle count against Ospreys
After an exceptional rearguard action by his Glasgow Warriors side almost brought an away win over Ospreys in his first game in charge, Sean Lineen has drawn comparison with his experience in the Scotland camp.

The national team's backs coach yesterday received detailed analysis of the performance which ended in a 16-13 defeat and expressed satisfaction with the effort put in.

"They answered a few questions," he said in The Herald. "We put in 169 tackles at a 91% success rate, which is exceptional, and our gameplan was right. We had them."

The stats are comparable with Scotland's defensive performance which brought victory over England in this season's Calcutta Cup match. Then, Frank Hadden said that 196 tackles at a 93% success rate had been unprecedented in his experience. Sean saw closer comparison with Hadden's first game in charge after being appointed on a permanent basis.

"We are probably a bit better without the ball at the moment and it actually reminded me more of the Argentina game at the start of the autumn, when Scotland played well but were narrowly beaten," he said.
Sean shuffled personnel in a way he believed would better suit the squad's strengths. That included moving Hefin O'Hare from wing to centre, playing Johnny Barclay at blindside flanker to support Donny Macfadyen at the breakdown and giving James Eddie his first Celtic League start at lock.

He described the performances of all three as outstanding, noting that John Barclay topped the tackle count with 18 successes and no misses, while 20-year-old James Eddie put in 14, half of them on Ospreys glamour boy Gavin Henson.

Having been Warriors backs coach throughout predecessor Hugh Campbell's time in charge Sean remains wary, however, and aware of how erratic his charges can be: "There is a little chink of light, but the players are genuinely upset, as we all know we don't deserve any respect yet after failing to win again when we could have."
