Sam is in South Africa with the Scotland squad and the scrum-half wants to become the latest New Zealand-born player to wear the thistle with distinction.
He made a dream start in a Scotland shirt with a try against the Barbarians, but Sam could be in line for a debut cap when Scotland take on the Springboks.
Sam said in the Glaswegian: "I'm delighted to be selected for Scotland and hopefully I'll get a chance to win my first cap.
"I know there are some who don't like kilted kiwis and while they only choose to remember the failures, there have been a lot of successes from this selection policy.
"Current Glasgow coach Sean Lineen is probably the most famous one - he was part of the 1990 Grand Slam team - and he did well for Scotland.
"Plus you have the likes of John and Martin Leslie as well as former Glasgow full-back Glenn Metcalfe - these guys were part of the team who won the last-ever Five Nations so the 'adopt-a-kiwi' policy has worked.
"As for myself, while I'm proud of my New Zealand roots, I'm also very proud of my Scottish ones, because that's where it all started.
"A couple of Christmases ago, my parents flew over to Glasgow to visit me and we decided we would re-trace my grandmother's roots.
"It was important to establish a link with my heritage. Although gran was born in Musselburgh, we found the house in Port Seton she knew as home before emigrating.
"It was quite something to be on the same street, looking at her house, and it made me proud of my heritage - although we didn't ring the bell as we thought the new owneres wouldn't want a bunch of kiwis on a past-finding tour traipsing through their house.
"After all that, I am now motivated by the thrill she and my dad will get from seeing me in the Scotland team. Should I get my first cap against the Springboks, then I will dedicate it to my family."
