Egg chasing at Easter camps

Alastair Kellock and his Warriors are helping out at the Easter rugby camps
Some 205 children are attending the Glasgow Warriors Easter rugby camp this week in the build up to the pro-team's Magners League clash with leaders Leinster at Hughenden on Friday (ko 7.30pm).

The camp is running from Monday to Wednesday this week at Cartha Queens Park's home ground Dumbreck and is open to children from Primary 6 up to under-16.

The Glasgow camp is one of four being run around the country as Scottish Rugby pilots the initiative in conjunction with the pro-teams and the Scotland team. The Border Reivers camp is also running this week while the Edinburgh Rugby camp and the Scotland camp in Perth will be held next week.

Glasgow's camp is being supported by Glasgow City Council NOPES funding (New Opportunities in PE & Sport) with 25 assisted places going to children from the city's most deprived areas.

In addition, 20 girls and boys from Rosehall High School will attend the camp thanks to funding from the Health Lifestyle project, an initiative centred around drug prevention and healthy living for youngsters in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. The project is supported by Scottish Rugby's SVQ apprentices, who have been influential in involving the girls this week. SVQs Jennifer Miller and Emma Waugh have worked tirelessly, and to great success, to encourage girls at the school to get involved in rugby.

Scottish Rugby's Head of Community Rugby Colin Thomson said: "We're very pleased that this inaugural Glasgow Warriors camp has been so well received by the community.

"We feel we have an important part to play in providing additional sporting opportunities for young people and this camp provides a safe, fun environment to keep children active as well as develop their rugby skills and give them the opportunity to meet their Glasgow Warrior heroes," he added.

Glasgow Warriors captain Alastair Kellock said: "It is fantastic to see so many children taking part in this camp. There is clearly a strong interest in both the sport and Glasgow Warriors here and we're hoping that many of these children will come down to Hughenden on Friday for our big game against Leinster."

The full Warriors squad are supporting the camp by helping out with coaching as well as meeting the participants and signing autographs tomorrow (Wednesday 4 April). The children will be playing different rugby games and working on their speed and skills with the help of some of the areas experienced rugby coaches.

Scottish Rugby's training partner, Baxters Soup, is supporting the event with their products, bags and nutrition sheets while Purely Scottish, official water supplier to the Scotland teams, are providing water to keep the children hydrated.

Dumbreck is a busy place this week with, as well as the 205 rugby youngster, Queens Park football club are holding their own camp with some 40 children taking part.

With the schools on holiday for Easter, it's a busy rugby week for Glasgow's children. This Friday, the Warriors are holding a coaching clinic for 60 children from the Hillhead, GHK, Paisley and West of Scotland clubs, taken by Scottish Rugby's Kenny Murray (Regional Development Manager for Glasgow North), Glen Tippet (Regional Development Manager for Glasgow South) and Grant Talbot (Rugby Development Officer for East Renfrewshire Council), along with some of the Warriors squad.
