Scotland lose out in Plate final

Ben Addison's extra-time try gave Scotland their first win over Fiji
Scotland finished up their Edinburgh Sevens campaign with a 14-5 defeat to South Africa in the consolation Plate play-off match.

The Scots went into the Plate competition after losing their Cup quarter-final to eventual champions New Zealand.

Scotland won their first ever victory against Fiji - in the ninth minute of sudden death extra time - to reach the final of the Plate.

With the Scots Leading 14-7 in the dying seconds of their Plate semi final, Fiji captain Marika Vunibaka found space in midfield and sprinted clear of the despairing Scotland defence to level at 14-14.

In sudden death extra time both sides had good chances to clinch victory, Jim Thompson making a superb tackle on the outstanding Setefano Cakau and Iliavi Satala denying Mike Adamson before Scotland worked space out wide to put in Ben Addison for the decisive score and send the Murrayfield crowd into mass hysteria.

Scotland coach Stephen Gemmell was proud of their display.

"I'm very disappointed not to come out with silverware, our performance in the final maybe merited it," he said.

"The effort has been magnificent, we have just equalled the best a Scotland sevens team has done."

great tournament, pity about expensive grub and drink. atmosphere, mostly down to kenya and fiji was brilliant. scotland played really well and if it wasnt for some daft errors would have/should have won this tournament. but anyways well done scotland you did us proud, great fighting spirit. The fiji game was awesome and i thought we might be there until midnight the way try saving tackles were made.

Impressive display - made a lot more difficult by being in a "Group of death" and then having Fiji to play. By the time the Plate final came around the team were obviously shattered. If they'd had England's draw...

Budgie was immense at times, seeing 3 or 4 steps ahead of everyone else. The other Warriors were great as well!

If that had been a 6N match, Thompson's tackle would live on in Murrayfield folklore for ever.
