Title battle over for the Warriors

Sean Lineen says Glasgow couldn't cope with the absence of so many key players
Sean Lineen says any hopes of Glasgow challenging for this season's Magners League title are all but over after their 12-0 defeat by Ulster at Ravenhill.

He told the Evening Times: "Basically we could not deal with the fact that we had 16 players in total, nine of whom may have started, missing due to a combination of Scotland Six Nations duty, World Cup sevens and injury.

"Again there were two soft defensive tries in the first half which I am very disappointed about conceding but after that I couldn't fault the boys, they gave me everything in some of the worst conditions I have ever witnessed on a rugby field.

"But with the gap between us and Munster now at 14 points we have to be realistic and say that the remaining fixtures are about getting back to winning ways, continuing to blood youngsters and planning for next season.

"I thought Johnnie Beattie had his best game of the season for us and really led by example while Fergus Thomson at hooker carried the ball extremely well. On top of that, at 12, Ruaridh Jackson just got better and better.

"These are all young guys who are only going to get better. I am still confident that when we have our full-strength side out we can give any side a game."

Sorry Sea,
You must live in cloud cuckoo land if you ever thought this team had even the remotest chance of winning the Magners League. We will do well do finish 3rd bottom at this rate, with 2nd bottom the likley finishing position and if that is where we finish, surely questions must be asked of Lineen, after all he has had a fair bit of money (most of it wasted on over rated foreigners) and sufficient time to turn things around.

I'm quite sure SL bases his comments on where he thinks this squad has the potential to go - we all have days at the office where we make mistakes and he'll know that one or two signings have been of the dodgy variety. The fact remains that it's not him who crosses the line on match day - it's a bunch of players whose only idea of professionalism is that they get paid. Even after defeat they go out clubbing while long-suffering supporters go home considering another wasted £15!
Get real boys - you're not superstars, just slightly above average rugby players who consistently let down a hard working and intelligent coach.

I think that's slightly unfair. Everyone goes out clubbing after their week's work is done - these are all young men who need to let their hair down from time to time. Nothing wrong with that. The on the field performance is a different matter, I believe, and criticising them for being normal human beings at the weekend isn't going to change that...

do you think that the teams who only win a couple of games a season shouldnt be allowed out for 40 odd weeks of the year? superstars or not, players are human beings just like you and me. get off your high horse and stop looking for things to cry about.

I have to say that I thought Glasgow wouldn't win but would definitely be top 3 this year however I have been quite disappointed with them this year. Mind you after a bad season Glasgow usually over perform the next so here's hoping.

Personally I think SL is a good manager and has been let down by the players though I think the last couple of weeks have disproven the notion that Glasgow has strength in depth.

As for SL in two minds ab out him being manager next season - from glasgow point of view would be a good thing however if he isn't then it is most likely that he will have taken over from hadden.

To be honest the writing was on the wall with us ending the season
with the ammount of away games we`ve had and our appalling away from home record.Sack the phycologist thats what I say!We need some
players that hate losing and don`t get homesick.

With the serious lack of depth we have in our squad, we are really going to ever struggle to finish in the top three. Especially when the likes of Munster and Leinster take the Magners seriously, which they certainly are starting to do.

We should be aiming in the short term to establish ourselves in the 4th or 5th position. Anything less than 6th is a serious failure even given the squad we have!

This season has been a poor one so far in terms of results, we were out of the HC after the first two rounds, being honset we were realistically out when we lost to the Dragons in round one.

In the Magners we were in the running for a while, but really we never had a serious chance after we had lost to Connacht and Ospreys 2nds (at home). There are two games you need to take 9 points from if you want to win a title, we took 2.

Now we are sitting only above two very average sides in the league.

To make the next step forward we need to sign some quality, which we have started doing in Cuister and the players we have re-signed.

If however we are going to continue spending money on the Forgien brigade, Berni apart they really have to contribute way more. If not then blood young Scots who wont cost anywhere near as much and might actually provide some long term good to us and the Scottish Game!

You better add T-bone to that foreign contribution Derek!.. and the top Scots are now asking for more money than SRU can afford. We can't blame Sean for that. We have done well to get Cussiter and I hope Mark steps up for the challenge! Agreed Connacht game in Magners and Dragons game in Heineken ruined our season tho'

Fair point about T-bone, shows that I need to take a breath during a rant, to think clearly!

overall Sean is doing a good job and that the team has potential to challange for a Playoff spot when they come in next year and given a half decent HC draw has decent run at the knockout rounds in Europe.

We are all entitled to our opinion, but I can't really see how anyone can say that Lineen is doing a "good job", it is his team and they still play like they don't know each other, making stupid unforced errors and constantly taking the wrong decision.
I am sure that a genuine "good caoch" would make a difference, but I doubt that a genuine "good coach" would want to work with Glasgow given the SRU and the constriants that they would have to work under.
I also doubt very much that we could reach a play off place, next season we will probably finish behind 3 of the irish teams (Munster, Leinster and Ulster) as well as several of the Welsh teams.

Don't get me wrong, being of native Glaswegian descent and all that and having lived there most of my life until quite recently... Glasgow is right nice by the way but... ask yourself this... if someone said to you "Hey, come and work as a rugby player in an exotic location (like Paris/South of France etc) and experience a mild climate where training outside and playing matches is generally a joy - rather than training in flippin Glasgow with its horizontal rain and frequent sub-zero temperatures" - what would you do? Oh, and by the way if they said they'd give you a little bit more dosh as well...? Can you blame them? I think most of the Glasgow boys and indeed pretty much all of the Scottish pros have their eyes on a stint with a French club at some point in their future - I for one can't find a valid reason to criticise them for that...

Posted by Alan on March 10, 2009 11:33 PM | Reply to this comment

Agreed ..but who was it that gave them that chance? I still have the right to criticise them for it!

Posted by Hugues on March 11, 2009 11:53 AM | Reply to this comment

I did not blame them at all, it was just an information.

We keep talking about potential, and that the team can do it when they want to. Sadly I’m beginning to wonder if we can only do it when the opposition don’t take us seriously enough. If we look across to the round ball game, Inverness Caley turned up at Ibrox last week and turned Rangers over, top v bottom, yet Caley get beat at the weekend by Falkirk. St Mirren get a really hammering at Parkhead then knock Celtic out the cup the very next weekend. Hibs and a host of other (so called smaller) teams have beaten both Rangers and Celtic this season yet their miles clear at the top. The point I’m making is that supporters and the media talk about these results as upsets or off days for the bigger clubs. No one starts claiming these sides should be capable of it every week. I’m really worried that we’ve all been guilty of over hyping our players and we expect too much? Does Sean really believe in his heart of hearts that this Glasgow team could have won the league??
