Disappointing start for Scotland

Scott Johnson was left lamenting Scotland's poor defensive work
Scotland's tour to South Africa got off to a disappointing start with a 27-17 defeat to Samoa in Durban.

The bruising encounter left the Scots with injury worries ahead of next week's game against South Africa.

Glasgow hooker Pat MacArthur's debut lasted only a few minutes before he was forced off with a knee injury. Skipper Kelly Brown only played the first 40 minutes due to an ankle injury and Euan Murray pulled a hamstring in the second half.

Glasgow's Alex Dunbar and Peter Horne also made their debut while Sean Lamont scored Scotland's only try.

“We are disappointed,” head coach Scott Johnson acknowledged after the match.

“Defensively we were very poor today and, as a result we lost the contact battles. We were off the clock a little bit, much the same way as we started the Six Nations against England.

“Their tries came from basic, first-up missed tackles.

“We have to get better as the challenge that lies ahead is a pretty daunting one.”
