February 17, 2023Glasgow Warriors 17 - 11 UlsterUnited Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Friday February 17th 2023 | No comments
Fraser Brown went over for Glasgow's third try Glasgow had to work hard to grind out a 17-11 win over Ulster in tonight's URC meeting at Scotstoun. The win extends Glasgow's unbeaten run to 10 games but ahead of a tricky trip to South Africa to take on Emirates Lions in a rearranged URC fixture. Jack Dempsey produced a man-of-the-match performance with Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend looking on, with the back-rower scoring one of Glasgow's two second-half tries. With the game played in constant heavy rain all four tries came from the forwards. Glasgow were first to score through Sione Vailanu in the 17th minute, with Harry Sheridan touching down for Ulster 12 minutes later. Nathan Doak found his range with his second shot at goal to give Ulster an 8-5 lead, which they would hold until half-time. Glasgow Warriors took control of the fixture in the second half as Dempsey crashed over the line with 15 minutes left to play before the rolling maul saw Fraser Brown add another late on. Duncan Weir converted Brown's try to give Glasgow a nine-point lead. A loose last five minutes from Warriors gave Ulster an opportunity to gain some territory and John Cooney grabbed a losing bonus point by slotting a penalty with time up on the clock. Glasgow assistant coach Pete Horne spoke to BBC Radio Scotland post-match: "It probably wasn't classic Glasgow but we showed another string to our bow," he said. "We managed to defend really well, and found a way to win in tough conditions. "We dominated the scrums at the end with the boys we brought on. It's testament to the squad - everyone just comes in and does his job. Great to see big Scott Cummings back. "At the end we're disappointed not to get a bonus point. We're almost a bit flat, but that just shows the character of the boys. It's a brilliant place to be and hopefully we kick kick on and win at the Lions next week."
