Benetton 9 - 19 Glasgow Warriors

United Rugby Championship match played at Stadio Comunale di Monigo on Saturday March 2nd 2024 | No comments

Tom Jordan's try closed out the win for Glasgow
Glasgow Warriors toughed out a 19-9 win over Benetton in this afternoon's URC meeting at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo.

Glasgow's tries came from Johnny Matthews, Stafford McDowall and Tom Jordan with Ross Thompson and Duncan Weir each adding a conversion.

Benetton replied through three Jacob Umaga penalties.

The win sees Glasgow jump ahead of Leinster at the top of the URC table - the Irish province could reclaim their top spot when they take on Cardiff in the evening.

First-half tries from Matthews - his 11th of the season - and McDowall put Glasgow in control at the interval but after the break the host's edged themselves back into the game through Umaga.

Just three points behind, Benetton pushed for a decisive score after Glasgow Lucio Sordoni was sin-binned for carelessly use of the forearm.

However, Warriors defended well before Jordan's late try eased any jitters.

Player of the match Stafford McDowall spoke to Viaplay on the whistle:

"We know how tough it is to come here and get the result. We've not won here in two or three years especially in conditions like this we knew it would be tough and Benetton were going to fight for everything. We're very proud.

"We knew that in the wet, if we could put some pressure on them and make them turn back, it would be a good result for us."

Glasgow head coach Franco Smith said: "I think the conditions made it difficult. Despite that, for us to stick to what we do well - I'm very happy with that.

"I think we know it's better to play without the ball and give them the ball because errors will come. I'm happy with the all-round performance. It's always tough to win away from home.

"They [Benetton] are a proud team, they haven't lost here all season. We're happy with that and now we go on and look towards the next game."
