February 16, 2025Dragons 20 - 45 Glasgow WarriorsUnited Rugby Championship match played at Rodney Parade on Sunday February 16th 2025 | No comments
![]() Jack Mann impressed throughout the game Glasgow Warriors went over for seven tries in a comfortable 45-20 win over Dragons at Rodney Parade. Scores from Johnny Matthews, Jack Mann, George Horne and Duncan Weir had given Warrriors the try bonus by the break. Dragons started well and tries from James Benjamin and Shane Lewis-Hughes kept them in touch at the interval, but tries from Nathan McBeth and Horne with his second calmed any jitters before Sebastian Cancelliere rounded off the scoring to mark his 50th game for Glasgow. Bottom of the table Dragons made a bright startto the URC fixture with hooker Benjamin marking his 100th appearance with an early try. Lloyd Evans added the extras to his opening penalty for a 10-0 lead to the hosts. Benjamin and Glasgow hooker Grant Stewart were both forced off with head knocks and it was the Glasgow man's replacement Matthews who crashed over after sloppy defence from Dragons. Evans added another penalty for Dragons minutes later but Mann quickly grabbed a second and Horne finished off an exciting move from Glasgow after a powerful break from prop Fin Richardson. Mann turned provider just before the break with another line break putting veteran stand-off Duncan Weir in to touch down amid defensive confusion. Warriors had secured their try bonus in the space of 14 minutes. Dane Blacker was sin-binned for an infringement in the build up to Weir's try, but it was Dragons who struck next through Lewis-Hughes to cut Glasgow's lead to four points at the break. Warriors began the second half like they meant business and it was replacement prop McBeth who rumbled over. Horne added his second after 46 minutes, with Weir converting both tries. There were debuts at both ends of the age spectrum when former Wales centre Scott Williams, 34, made his first appearance for Dragons among rafts of early changes on both sides, while youngsters Macenzzie Duncan and Kerr Johnston made their debuts for the Warriors. Johnston replaced Josh McKay after the New Zealander was helped off after a late tackle. The closing period of the game was bitty with little excitement and it was Cancelliere who strolled over after 72 minutes to mark his half-century of Glasgow caps. Speaking to Premier Sports at full time, Player of the Match, number eight Jack Mann said: "It's definitely a big result on the road for us. "We were a bit slow at the start of the first half but we came out and really executed well at the second half. "The sign of a good team is when you can close out the result when you're ahead and I felt we did that well today. "I've been at Glasgow a long time so the shape we run is almost second nature though it can be a challenge switching between (club and country) notebooks, but I'm just enjoying being in the Scotland camp." Glasgow head coach Franco Smith said post match: "We were inaccurate. if you don't play week after week, a bit of rust accumulates. We've got boys out for two weeks who didn't play and they were just off it. "[At half-time] We looked at what we needed to do better and the boys responded fantastically." On Jack Mann's performance, he added: "Jack wants to play in the Six Nations now. He's close, he's in the group, he's playing well. "Everybody in the team had some individual motivation. He stepped up at the right time and proved he can play at the next level." Smith also provided an update on Glasgow fullback Josh McKay who linked off following a dangerous tackle. Smith was reluctant to comment immediately post-match, but he said the ankle injury McKay picked up in the second half appeared not to be too serious. "It looks like a syndesmosis injury," the South African said. "It is obviously the initial interpretation of the injury. We will have to scan that. "With all these things, it takes a couple of days. Hopefully, it is not that serious. I have not had a word with the medical team yet but he, as a player, felt it was improving from a pain perspective."
