March 21, 2025Glasgow Warriors 28 - 25 MunsterUnited Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Friday March 21st 2025 | No comments
![]() Glasgow skipper marked his return to action with a fine try Glasgow Warriors left it late but eventually edged out old rivals Munster 28-25 in hard-fought encounter at Scotstoun this evening. The Warriors were applauded on to the pitch by the 2015 PRO12 title-winning squad, who were in attendance to mark 10 years since their triumph, but it was Munster who dominated the early territory and possession. That early momentum was stalled when Munster lock Fineen Wycherley was sin-binned for a needless act of dangerous play at a ruck. Munster still managed to build a seven-point lead during his time in the bin, with flanker John Hodnett touching down on the left after a great crossfield kick from Tony Butler. Munster extended their lead in the 23rd minute when Sean O'Brien went over on the on the right. Butler missed the conversion. Warriors finally clicked into gear after 28 minutes when George Horne finished off after slick work from Stafford McDowall and Ollie Smith. Horne is now Glasgow's joint-highest scorer alongside DTH van der Merwe on 58. Adam Hastings added the conversion. Butler added a penalty for Munster in the 33rd minute but the hosts closed the deficit to just the single point at the break as Kyle Steyn raced in from halfway and Hastings converted. Another Butler penalty in the 56th minute gave the visitors some breathing space before they stretched their advantage to 11 points when O'Brien evaded some poor home defence for his second try of the night. Rory Scannell added the extras. Matt Fagerson bulldozed his way over after smart work from Sebastian Cancelliere, with Hastings converting. Warriors took the lead for the first time in the 76th minute when Nathan McBeth pushed over from close range following some sustained pressure in front of the line, with Hastings adding the two-pointer. Warriors managed to see out the remaining minutes to take the full five points with Munster leaving Scotstoun with a single well-deserved bonus point. Speaking to Premier Sports, Glasgow head coach Franco Smith said: "Fortunately we got it done, even if we made it hard for ourselves again. "We were our own enemies for most of it, but I'm happy to win even if it wasn't our best performance. "We've had more than 20 boys away with the national team, only had two sessions leading up to this game. We need to add these boys to gel again. Next week the rest of the boys will come back and we'll face the same challenges. "We missed touch three times from penalties, lost the gain-line most of the time tonight, couldn't get our attack shape, but credit to Munster - they are a well-coached team. We'll take that compliment in winning anyway tonight." Player of the match Sebastian Cancelliere told Premier Sports: "We knew they would come after us after losing against Edinburgh, but we needed to bounce back as well after losing against Ospreys. The boys showed character." Glasgow captain Kyle Steyn added: "It's always tough against Munster so it's good to get the win."
