January 10, 2025Glasgow Warriors 29 - 19 Racing 92Champions Cup match played at Scotstoun on Friday January 10th 2025 | No comments
Sebastian Cancelliere went over for a fine try Glasgow Warriors secured a place in the final 16 of the Champions Cup with a bonus point win over Racing 92 at Scotstoun this evening. The Scotstoun ground staff worked around the clock to make sure the fixture was able to beat the sub-zero temperatures and their efforts were rewarded by the Glasgow players. Tries from George Horne, Jamie Dobie, Sebastian Cancelliere, Kyle Steyn and Rory Darge saw Franco Smith's men to the win that puts them top of Pool 4, four points above Toulon who play Harlequins on Sunday. Racing 92's scores came from Vinaya Habosi, Lee-Marvin Mazibuko and Tristan Tedder and, although it wasn't enough to take a losing bonus point, they did finish strongly at a freezing Scotstoun. Glasgow started at pace and took an early lead after Josh McKay's break carried them beyond the Racing backline with Tom Jordan putting George Horne over for the try. Horne converted off the post to put Warriors 7-0 ahead. After another break into Racing territory, the scrum-half was forced off for an HIA - he failed it and did not return - but the Warriors continued to attack and soon claimed a second try. Horne's replacement, Jamie Dobie, scored after Matt Fagerson made a line break through some poor defence before feeding Dobie for a simple score. Tom Jordan hit the post with the conversion. The hosts soon added a third try through Argentine wing Sebastian Cancelliere after a quick free kick by Dobie and some slick handling from the Glasgow backline. Jordan was off-target again with the conversion. Racing finally opened their account with a try late in the opening period from Vinaya Habosi. Glasgow, though, ended the half on top to claim their fourth score - and the bonus point - courtesy of eventual player-of-the-match Sione Tuipulotu who cut a lovely line through the Racing defence after a lineout. Jordan couldn't make the tricky conversion. Glasgow maintained control after the break and Rory Darge added a fifth try from a driving maul with Jordan adding the extras. Racing emptied their bench and began to make inroads into the Glasgow defence with Fagerson sin-binned for slapping the ball away at a ruck. The visitors took advantage to score twice late on through Lee-Marvin Mazibuko and Tristan Tedder. In the end it was a comfortable enough win for Warriors - for 60 minutes Warriors they looked in complete control - but they'll be disappointed with the last quarter with Racing 92 finding their power game to go over for a couple of scores. Speaking to Premier Sports, Glasgow head coach Franco Smith said: "It's Champions Cup, it's quality teams. They brought on a lot of experience and energy from their bench and they did what was asked. "Our yellow card was unneccesary. We defended well enough to not give that away and that led to a couple of tries that we've leaked. Enough to work on but excited we've made progress. "We fell two minutes short [against Harlequins last season]. We regroup, have a look on Monday. We've got a plan to go there and see how we can progress from tonight." Smith also spoke to BBC Scotland, saying: "We obviously want to improve, it's early in the year. It's the Christmas period, and sometimes when you're not in the building for a week, some things will give. "The first hour, I was happy with. The boys stuck to script. There was good positive steps. Some frustration from the Edinburgh loss helped. "We need to kick on. We need put on an 80-minute performance, like we used to do. It is there, one or two games that will allow us to be ourselves up until the end. "Sione (Tuipulotu) plays well. The reason he's walking away with the man of the match medal so often is because he plays well. He's in a good space. His contribution is massively appreciated." Player of the match Sione Tuipulotu told Premier Sports: "I feel good, we played well first half, that's what we aimed for. We dropped off last 20 minutes and that's something we need to fix before we go to Harlequins. "We need to take the learnings every week. There's parts of today that are us, when we move the ball and run with intend. Parts of the game weren't us, we dropped down in collisions, there were a few missed tackle. It's something we need to fix if we want to compete with the top end of the competition. "It's a relationship we've built throughout the season. Me and Tom [Jordan] are close off the field and it helps when you're playing with your best mates. It creates that cohesion. Tom was exceptional again tonight and we'll need him in the bigger games. "If we beat [Harlequins] next week, we can play a round of 16 here [at Scotstoun] for the first time and that motivates us. I want to play in front of my son and fiance." Tom Jordan talked to Premier Sports about the Warriors dropping off, saying: "It's a collective thing, it's a tough one. When you get up early in games, it's just having that ruthless mindset and developing that. It's the hardest thing in sport - even the best teams in the world struggle with that. "For 80 minutes, you have to keep your foot on the throat. That'll take us from good to great. Hopefully we keep building that mindset."
