A man for all seasons

A season that started with such promise for Glasgow seems to be shuddering to a halt amid criticism of the coaching staff and players.

Talk has already started on who will be leaving and who will be arriving to play for the Warriors. Throughout the unrest and shuffling of team line-ups Gordon Bulloch has proved his worth on the domestic and international front.

A virtual ever present for Glasgow this term, Bulloch has started all of Scotland's eighteen matches in the last two seasons. With Gav Scott's move to a backroom role at Warriors and Ben Daly's bad luck with injuries, Bulloch has played almost every minute of every game for Glasgow.

At a time when the new Glasgow coaching staff have been bemoaning the lack of quality in the Warriors squad they inherited, it's interesting to hear Kiwi Searancke's thoughts on the hooker. He told Scottish Rugby magazine: "Gordon Bulloch has been tremendous for us. He is a player who as an individual has come up big time. How the hell we look after him for both ourselves and Scotland I don't know".

This last point referring to the danger of "burn out" again highlights the lack of depth to the Glasgow squad. At the moment the Warriors have four players who can operate at scrum-half but only one fit professional hooker with Fergus Thomson of West Of Scotland providing back up.

New faces will join the squad but Glasgow must address their areas of weakness if our best players aren't to suffer. An interview with Gordon Bulloch is in the January 2003 edition of Scottish Rugby Magazine.
