Campbell wants Glasgow to be more professional

In an interview with David Ferguson in The Scotsman, Hugh Campbell says that he would like to see as many Glasgow-bred players in his squad as possible, but admits that he wants a team capable of performing well in the new Celtic League. That, he says, means having a small dose of quality imports.

Campbell admits: "You could point to a foreigner and say he's keeping a Scottish lad out. I don't want that any more than any Scottish supporter, but there is a balance to be struck. A foreigner like Todd Blackadder can have a hugely positive effect on a team and the development of youngsters. If you look at how Edinburgh have developed over the last two years and the way the players have changed in their approach, it has been quite significant.

"Much of that is through how the players have developed professionally and Todd has had a definite influence. He has brought a real professionalism to the group, and I think that is still to be done at Glasgow - Glasgow could become a much more professional team.

"Players have to take more responsibility for their own development. It's critical that we develop intelligent rugby players.

"That's what I'd like to develop, an environment where the players can develop and respond to their maximum capacity. Ultimately, it's about improving Glasgow rugby and Glasgow players, but sometimes a player like Todd can help in that. We can't afford to close our minds and become introverted if we're to push Scotland forward."

David Ferguson also reports that Gordon Simpson will be leaving Glasgow while Graeme Morrison of Glasgow Hawks and Dan Parks of Eastern Suburbs will be playing their rugby at Hughenden next season.
