Mather stresses the need for a good club spirit

In an interview with Iain Morrison in the Sunday Herald, Cameron Mather talks about the importance of a good club spirit. Mather claims that generating this spirit is "almost more important than the rugby side of things", and cites his former club, Leeds, as a good example.

"Phil (Davies) isn't out of the game that long," says Mather about his current coach, who many tip for the Welsh national post. "He is very passionate about his rugby. He was fortunate to play the game as an amateur and so now it's an added bonus that we get paid and he has the ability to bring that out in players.

The club has a family orientated atmosphere and Phil's wife takes charge of all the players' wives and girlfriends. Some of the things that Budge (Pountney) complained about are small but important - after all, a happy partner means a happy player, and now Leeds is just like a rugby club used to be."

Glasgow continue to be linked with a number of players. Iain Morrison reports that Glasgow are chasing both Gordon McIlwham, currently at Bordeaux, and Matthew Proudfoot, who has played the Super 12 season with the Bulls.
