Now Andy Nicol has retired from playing it looks like he won't be short of a story or two for after dinner speaking engagements. Another story involving Andy has appeared in the diary section of the Herald.

Andy, the last Scotland rugby captain to hold aloft the Calcutta Cup after beating England (fans have an abiding memory of Andy receiving the trophy from Princess Anne at a wet and windy Murrayfield, with blood pouring down his chin) joined the Scottish rugby hall of fame at the Scottish Rugby Awards on Friday.

When Andy was asked what he remembered of the day, he recalled: "I was in shock afterwards. But it wasn't from winning: it was the shock of seeing Dougie Donnelly's hair dye dripping down his cheek as he interviewed me in the rain."
