Cammy joins call for players' association

Cammy Mather has expressed support for the campaign to set up a players' association in Scotland.

The new Glasgow captain saw the benefits of trade union membership during his time at Leeds and wouldn't hesitate in recommending to his players that they join one.

Fellow Warrior, Gordon Bulloch and former Glasgow captain Andy Nicol have already called for the formation of an association to look after the interests of professional players in Scotland.

"There are all sorts of benefits and every single person at our club was a member," said Cammy in an interview with Kevin Ferrie in today's Herald.

"The way the association works in England there is a universal contract with standard conditions that every player signs which helps enormously with negotiations.

"However, the big thing was the bonuses you would get for your £100 a year membership. Things like additional insurance cover for injury and money towards education. If you produced the receipts they would give you up to £1500 a year towards educational costs.

"They also helped with job placements, finding companies in your area in the career of your choice who would give you part-time work - maybe as little as one day a week - which would allow you to look towards the long-term future once your playing days were over."

"It is all about player welfare and on the back of my experience in England I would definitely recommend it to our players if something similar was set up in Scotland," he said.
