Matt played in all three internationals for Scotland on the 1998 tour to Fiji and Australia while he was playing with Edinburgh Reivers' squad. However, injury during the 1999-2000 season cut short the prop's Scottish career.
More recently, he was persuaded out of semi-retirement to play for North-West Transvaal Leopards in the Currie Cup and the Blue Bulls in Super 12.
Matt will revive an association with Hugh Campbell, Glasgow's new head coach. For the past five years, before his appointment to Glasgow, Campbell had been the forwards' coach with the national squad.
"Matt was very impressive then," the coach remarked today, looking back to Proudfoot's earlier career in Scottish rugby. "He's very knowledgeable, more than just in scrummaging, and he's a good ball-player. I've been following his progress closely since he returned to rugby in South Africa, and he's performed well in the Super 12. I'm looking forward to seeing the benefit of his experience."
"Like Hugh, I'm pleased to welcome a player with Matt's knowledge and experience to our ranks," David Jordan, Glasgow's chief executive, said today.
Proudfoot's first appearance for Glasgow is expected to be in the practice match against Gloucester at Kingsholm on Thursday next week (14 August).
