Glasgow almost climb the mountain

Donnie Macfadyen was outstanding for Glasgow
Glasgow Warriors produced their best rugby in two seasons to defeat Saracens 33-5, only to fall just four points short of pulling off a remarkable comeback win.

Tries from Andy Henderson, Rory Kerr and skipper Cammy Mather, with the kicks by Dan Parks and Calvin Howarth gave Glasgow another victory over Zurich Premiership opposition and almost saw them through to the Parker Pen Challenge Cup quarter-final.

Having lost the first leg in London 37-6 in London, it looked like a mission impossible at Hughenden but it was like the good old days at Hughenden as, for the first time in a couple of seasons, the Glasgow crowd found their voice to roar their team forward. Every player that got on the field had their moment and played their part in an outstanding effort from Glasgow.

The disappointment of the players after the game was obvious, but in a perverse way it was encouraging as this was no desperate points chase from Glasgow - it was a controlled, disciplined and passionate display from a group of players that wanted to win, and know they should have won the tie.

It could be argued that with three minutes left, a penalty in front of the posts should have been kicked. With six minutes of injury time played, Glasgow had more than enough time to get the score that would take them through. It could also be argued that penalties should have been kicked in the first-leg at Vicarage Road. It's so easy to make these judgments now and it shouldn't be allowed to detract from a brave performance.

Rory Kerr looked to have regained the confidence that is so important to his game while Gareth Maclure and Sean Lamont enjoyed the plentiful ball that came their way. The Andy Henderson/Graeme Morrison partnership clicked for the first time while Graeme Beveridge and Dan Parks are developing a good understanding.

The Glasgow front five - especially Lee Harrison - had a huge game. They were solid in the scrummage, carried the ball well and bullied the Saracens pack in the rucks. Cammy Mather, Donnie Macfadyen and Jon Petrie were everywhere, pouncing on any loose ball and driving Glasgow forward.

At various points this season Glasgow have threatened to turn on a performance like last night's. Glasgow have a group of talented and hard working players with some outstanding youngsters, but it may take another season for them to become the finished article. The Glasgow crowd have their part to play in the process. As I said after the first-leg, it's hard to support a team when they are struggling, but it makes it all the better when they produce a performance like last night's. The Glasgow players gave the crowd lots to shout about last night. Hopefully the Glasgow crowd will be there to shout their support when the players need it in future.

Too bad - a wee trip to Montferrand would have been good. It would also have given us a chance to pay them back for what happened a couple of seasons ago.
