Representatives of the Scottish, Irish and Welsh rugby unions have had "very preliminary discussions" over the future of the trophy and the Celtic League.
It is understood the SRU and IRFU want to reduce the number of games in future seasons, but it is a plan which has already caused widespread disapproval in Wales, although the current structure cannot be changed until 2005 due to existing contracts.
However, the SRU insist the league system of home and away games will continue next season but the cup competition.
An SRU spokesman said: "There have been some very preliminary discussions at Celtic League level, but no decision has been made on anything, other than games for next year will remain home and away.
"From our point of view, we have tabled to the Celtic League the importance of looking at the structure of the league in totality.
"We are content to look forward to next year with the home and away but, in the longer term, we will be looking at the number of weekends that are being allocated and also, for example, whether we would wish the Celtic Cup to continue."
