Williams has hinted that he may shift skipper Chris Paterson to wing or full-back with Dan taking on the vital stand-off role in Sunday's Six Nations clash with France.
Dan said: "I have faced sides from France three times and haven't experienced defeat yet.
"This season I played twice for Glasgow against Montpellier in the Parker Pen Cup and a couple of years back I was in the Leeds Tykes team that beat Beziers.
"It would be a massive honour and thrill for me to represent Scotland at stand-off.
"It could be easier to be on from the start instead of joining the action from the bench as I did against Wales and England. It is hard to come on as a sub and immediately adapt to the pace, especially at the top level.
"Going into the international set-up means the rugby is quicker and more physical than I have been accustomed to. I realised the difference when I went back to play for Glasgow against Connacht. The experience of having played with and against the best players in the world helped me at league level."
Dan knows that if he's selected in the playmaking role, Scotland's hopes could depend on his performance with the boot.
He said: "The positional kicking in Italy wasn't that bad but I would be aiming to get that part of my game right to get us into the proper positions and get the forwards on the front foot.
"It would also be my job to organise the midfield and at international level it is much tougher when you are playing in heavy traffic."
