Apprentices should be part of Glasgow Warriors

As concern grows over the nature of the new apprentice contracts on offer to Scotland's most promising young player, David Jordan has stressed that he'll do all he can to maintain Glasgow's identity.

The Herald reported last week and again today that the SRU are understood to be trying to get the Celtic League to allow apprentices to move freely among Scotland's professional teams. At the moment the Celtic League rules wouldn't allow this.

"We would want the apprentices we sign to attach themselves to Glasgow," said Jordan. "They will be SRU contracts, but our belief is that, when they agree terms with us, they are very much part of Glasgow.

"We are going to be down to 28 or 29 player squads so on occasions, if it is a necessity and it is in the interests of their career to move to another pro team, then they could be required to fill gaps elsewhere," said Jordan. "As things stand, though, once they were registered with us they would have to be transferred to the other team to be able to do that."

"We would have primacy of contract and they would be expected to train with us as much as possible, but they would be able to continue their studies, continue in employment or even sign contracts with clubs if they are offered them," said Jordan. "Some of these youngsters won't play for professional teams at all at this stage so we will still be operating back-up squads and relying on experienced players such as Alan Bulloch and Mark Sitch to help us out when necessary."
