JJ hopes Mark can prove his fitness

Scotland U21s are preparing for their World Championship opener against South Africa, with manager John Jeffrey hoping former Glasgow scrum-half Mark McMillan can prove his fitness.

"Mark McMillan underwent surgery on an injured ankle a few weeks ago so, obviously, he will be one of the first players we check out on teaming up," admitted JJ to the Edinburgh Evening News.

"We hope Mark comes through fitness tests because he has the experience of playing in the team which finished seventh last year and can add some bite to our style of play.

"But, if it is necessary to make a change, then Brendan McKerchar can prove a more than capable deputy."

Scotland kick-off on Friday against South Africa at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh.
