In a dour match at the Greenyards one of the few bright spots was the performance of Scott Barrow at full-back. With Moffat">Stuart Moffat and Glenn Metcalfe leaving during the summer, Glasgow were left without an experienced full-back. Rory Lamont and Rory Kerr have filled in but Glasgow required more experienced help and Andy Craig knew that was something his old Orrell teammate could provide.
Andy, who signed for Glasgow over the summer, knew that the financial problems at Scott's club, Rotherham, meant that his friend was available.
Scott takes up the story: "We are both from St Helens so we knew each other even before we joined Orrell.
"Andy knew my situation at Rotherham where things were looking pretty bad after I had signed a two-year deal. I had just moved into a new house in St Helens with my girlfriend too, and it was very worrying, but after he put a word in for me, Hugh Campbell asked to see me so it was all down to Andy."
Scott made an immediate impact when he scored a fine try minutes after coming on against Sale in a pre-season friendly at Hughenden.
"It was a good time to come on because we had just started to put a bit of pressure on them, but I was happy to make an impression," said Scott.
"It was a weird way to start with a new club because Andy had only introduced me to a couple of guys the previous day. I met most of them in the dressing room before the game and, to be honest, I'm still working with nicknames rather than knowing everyone's name.
Glasgow have struggled to find form in their warm-up games and last week's Celtic League opener against Connacht, but Scott still thinks there is reason for optimism: "Some good things have come out of all the games we've played," he says. "We went quite well in the midfield and made some breaks last week but we made mistakes on second and third phase, either coughing up the ball or letting them slow it down."
So how will Scott repay his old friend for helping him escape the trials and tribulations at Rotherham?
"I certainly owe Andy, and I don't think he'll let me forget it because he's already told me he wants a cut of my wages. But if the opportunities arise, then I'd rather pay him back in tries."
